Izzet (UR) Commander Combos

Izzet combos win by drawing the entire deck and then doing something about it — the color pair's defining identity is engine-first, payoff-second. Blue provides the card selection and countermagic to assemble pieces; red provides the payoffs that turn infinite loops into actual kills. The result is a combo landscape built around two distinct approaches: sacrifice loops that generate infinite tokens and mana, and artifact cost-reduction chains that bounce the entire board while accumulating an insurmountable storm count.

The highest-volume lines run through The Locust God. Pair it with Skullclamp and either Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar, and each insect that dies funds drawing the next card, which creates the next insect. The loop is self-sustaining and ends with an arbitrarily large army of hasty tokens — a fast kill that requires only three pieces, two of which are staples in dozens of other strategies.

Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain anchors the other major cluster. Her trigger fires every time a historic spell resolves, which means an artifact cost-reducer — Etherium Sculptor, Foundry Inspector, Helm of Awakening, or Enthusiastic Mechanaut — turns Sol Ring into an engine that draws into itself indefinitely. Words of Wind converts that card advantage into a one-sided board clear, bouncing every opponent's permanent while Jhoira's artifacts keep replaying for free. The redundancy here is real: the cost-reducer slot accepts five or more different cards, making this line surprisingly consistent despite requiring four pieces.

Displacer Kitten adds a third axis. With Sensei's Divining Top and a mana producer like The One Ring or Birgi, God of Storytelling, each spell cast blinks the Kitten, which untaps the mana source, which pays for the next draw — building toward infinite card draw and a near-infinite storm count before anything needs to die or bounce.

What ties these lines together is that Izzet combos rarely win through combat damage alone. The tokens from The Locust God finish games, but the loops themselves are about card draw, storm count, and board control. Blue's cantrips and tutors find the missing pieces; red's cost-reducers and mana doublers accelerate the critical turn. Countermagic protects the combo in ways black or green can't replicate. Izzet doesn't grind — it sets up, identifies the window, and ends the game in a single turn.
