Grixis (UBR) Commander Combos
Grixis combos are built on spells, sacrifice, and recursion — the color combination specializes in looping instants and sorceries through the graveyard to generate infinite mana or triggers, then closing the game through the consequences of those loops. Where green-based combo often leans on creatures and lands, Grixis uses the stack itself as its engine room.
The most-played lines in the format run through Cormela, Glamour Thief, whose ability to return instants and sorceries from the graveyard becomes explosive when paired with Saw in Half. Creating two tokens of Cormela while sacrificing the original yields death and ETB triggers that chain into the mana ritual that started the loop — Dark Ritual is the classic enabler, generating infinite black mana and infinite instant/sorcery-restricted blue mana in a compact three-card package. Swap Dark Ritual for Jeska's Will and the loop produces a similar result while also generating infinite ETB triggers, giving the shell flexibility in how it closes.
Inalla, Archmage Ritualist represents the more elaborate end of Grixis combo. Her lines involve Archaeomancer, Spellseeker, and a chain of reanimation spells — Shallow Grave, Reanimate, Entomb — working together to produce infinite hasty Wizard tokens. The setup requires more cards and more decision points, but the payoff is a board that wins immediately through combat rather than relying on a secondary condition.
The Displacer Kitten engine shows up in several Grixis lists as a modular combo core. Pairing Kitten with Frantic Search and Dark Ritual creates a loop that generates near-infinite storm count and infinite looting; the third piece — Ardent Elementalist, Pinnacle Monk, or a similar instant/sorcery recursion creature — determines the exact output but doesn't change the fundamental architecture.
The Locust God offers a different angle: Skullclamp plus Pitiless Plunderer converts each drawn card into treasure and a hasty Insect, making infinite card draw synonymous with an infinite army. This line plays well through interaction because the pieces are individually useful rather than dead without the full combo assembled.
Across all these lines, Dark Ritual is the thread that ties Grixis combo together — instant-speed mana acceleration that slots into loops without needing a permanent on the battlefield. The color combination rewards players who understand the stack and the graveyard as resources, not afterthoughts.
