Teferi's Protection
Instant
Until your next turn, your life total can't change and you gain protection from everything. All permanents you control phase out. (While they're phased out, they're treated as though they don't exist. They phase in before you untap during your untap step.)

Teferi's Protection phases out your entire board and makes you untargetable until your next turn — it's a one-card answer to a board wipe, a lethal attack step, or a resolved Ad Nauseam at the wrong moment. At three mana in white, it's one of the most efficient panic buttons ever printed, and King of the Oathbreakers decks that lean on a fragile token engine treat it as a must-run.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

King of the Oathbreakers
King of the Oathbreakers builds a board of Spirits that collapse the moment the commander dies or a wipe resolves, so Teferi's Protection does double duty — protecting both the token army and King of the Oathbreakers itself through a cleanup step.

Captain America, First Avenger
Captain America, First Avenger attacks-matter builds invest heavily in combat setup that gets erased by a single board wipe, and Teferi's Protection lets that infrastructure survive the turn it's most vulnerable.

Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV sits in a stax shell that becomes the archenemy at every table, making Teferi's Protection the cleanest way to weather a concentrated pile of removal and counterspells aimed at dismantling the lock.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope
Avacyn, Angel of Hope already makes your permanents indestructible, but exile and -X/-X effects bypass that entirely — Teferi's Protection covers the gaps Avacyn herself can't.

The Ur-Dragon
The Ur-Dragon decks sink enormous mana into a dragon board that represents an instant-win threat, and Teferi's Protection means that investment survives the inevitable emergency board wipe opponents slam in response.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Teferi's Protection is a Commander staple in the truest sense — the format's multiplayer dynamics, where three opponents can pile on in a single turn cycle, are exactly what make phasing out your entire board so backbreaking. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but rarely played, since those formats reward proactive threats over reactive shields and the card does nothing on offense. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where Teferi's Protection shows up meaningfully, protecting a planeswalker investment the same way it protects a Commander board.

Teferi's Protection has been reprinted multiple times and price varies significantly by printing, so check current listings before buying — foil and original printings command a premium while reprint editions bring the cost down considerably. It's a long-term staple with no realistic ban risk in Commander, so any copy at a price you're comfortable with is a sound pickup.
