Nissa, Ascended Animist card art
Nissa, Ascended Animist enters at up to nine loyalty and immediately threatens to flood the board with Phyrexian Wurm tokens — the floor is a six-mana 3/3 and the ceiling is a nine-mana army. The cost is real: without ramp or cost reduction, she sits expensive in most non-green shells, but Carth the Lion and Vorel of the Hull Clade both exploit her loyalty count hard enough to justify every mana.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Carth the Lion

Carth the Lion

55.8% of decks · synergy 0.54

Carth the Lion's passive lets Nissa, Ascended Animist enter with an extra loyalty counter, pushing her token output higher from turn one — and his tutor trigger means you can find her on demand, making her a reliable finisher rather than a lucky draw.

02
Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider

Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider

34.4% of decks · synergy 0.28

Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider doubles every loyalty counter Nissa, Ascended Animist enters with, so a kicked cast at nine counters becomes eighteen — her minus ability then produces tokens scaled to that inflated count, threatening lethal board presence in a single activation.

03
Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres

13.6% of decks · synergy 0.13

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres triggers off proliferate, and Nissa, Ascended Animist's minus ability proliferates as part of its resolution — each activation draws cards through Ezuri while also building her token army.

04
Xavier Sal, Infested Captain

Xavier Sal, Infested Captain

12.3% of decks · synergy 0.12

Xavier Sal, Infested Captain cares about incubate and toxic creatures, and Nissa, Ascended Animist's Phyrexian Wurm tokens arrive with toxic 1, feeding Xavier Sal's poison-counter gameplan with every activation.

05
Ashaya, Soul of the Wild

Ashaya, Soul of the Wild

18.5% of decks · synergy 0.12

Ashaya, Soul of the Wild turns all creatures into Forests, which means the Phyrexian Wurm tokens Nissa, Ascended Animist creates also tap for green mana — turning a board-flood activation into a mana engine that can fuel further spells the same turn.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Commander is where Nissa, Ascended Animist does her best work: the format's higher mana totals make a six-to-nine mana planeswalker viable, and the counter-doubling and proliferate synergies available in green and black commanders push her well above rate. In competitive Pioneer and Modern, she's legal but too slow without a dedicated shell — green stompy shells occasionally test her as a top-end finisher, but she's largely absent from those tournament metagames. Legacy and Vintage have access to her but rarely want a nine-drop that doesn't immediately win the game outright. Oathbreaker is a natural home if you want her as the signature spell in a counter-manipulation shell, though the smaller deck size and commander tax on spells rather than planeswalkers changes the calculus slightly.
