Freed from the Real card art
Freed from the Real does one thing: untap a creature repeatedly for one blue mana, which is enough to generate infinite mana, infinite activations, or infinite anything else the target creature touches. The cost is a two-mana blue aura that dies to removal and requires a mana-producing creature to function — pair it with Bloom Tender or Neerdiv, Devious Diver and it's a combo piece; in isolation, it's a blank.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Neerdiv, Devious Diver

Neerdiv, Devious Diver

71.0% of decks · synergy 0.67

Neerdiv, Devious Diver appears in over 70% of Freed from the Real decks because the commander itself is a mana producer that generates value on tap — Freed from the Real turns that into an infinite loop with the right support pieces in play.

02
Merieke Ri Berit

Merieke Ri Berit

61.5% of decks · synergy 0.61

Merieke Ri Berit taps to steal a creature and untapping her destroys what she took — Freed from the Real lets you untap and retap Merieke Ri Berit at instant speed, wiping the board one creature at a time.

03
Kilo, Apogee Mind

Kilo, Apogee Mind

53.4% of decks · synergy 0.50

Kilo, Apogee Mind rewards repeated tapping and untapping with cumulative value, making Freed from the Real a reliable engine to chain activations and snowball the commander's triggers each turn.

04
Alaundo the Seer

Alaundo the Seer

49.6% of decks · synergy 0.45

Alaundo the Seer exiles cards and counts down omen counters each time he taps, so Freed from the Real accelerates the clock by letting you tap him multiple times per turn and cascade into your library faster.

05
Red Death, Shipwrecker

Red Death, Shipwrecker

38.8% of decks · synergy 0.38

Red Death, Shipwrecker produces mana or value on the tap trigger, giving Freed from the Real a live target that generates resources — enough in the right shell to build toward an infinite loop.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Commander is by far where Freed from the Real does its best work — the format's singleton rule doesn't hurt a combo piece, and the 100-card pool is full of multi-color mana dorks and tap-effect commanders that turn it into a two-card engine. In Pauper, Freed from the Real is legal and sees genuine play in Familiars combo, where it generates infinite blue mana alongside Sunscape Familiar or Nightscape Familiar. Legacy and Vintage have access to faster, less interactive combo lines, so Freed from the Real rarely competes there outside fringe brews. It's not legal in Pioneer or Standard, which cuts off the formats that might otherwise welcome cheap enchantment synergies.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Pemmin's Aura is the closest functional replacement for Freed from the Real — same untap effect stapled to the same style of aura, at a similar price, with the added flexibility of pump and shroud modes. If you need something cheaper, Vigean Graftmage and Horseshoe Crab offer the untap effect on a creature body rather than an aura, which trades enchantment vulnerability for creature vulnerability and removes the need to target something else.

Price Context

Current price

$7.79 mid tier

At $7.79, Freed from the Real sits in mid-tier pricing for a combo enabler — not a budget pickup, but not a painful inclusion either. It's been reprinted enough to keep the ceiling relatively stable, so this is approximately what you'll pay for the foreseeable future.
