Liquimetal Torque card art
Liquimetal Torque gives you two mana on the first turn it's down and then converts any permanent into an artifact on demand — that second ability is the reason it's in hundreds of combo decks. Magda, Brazen Outlaw and Baba Lysaga, Night Witch both run it at over 70% inclusion, which tells you this isn't a curiosity; it's infrastructure.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Baba Lysaga, Night Witch

Baba Lysaga, Night Witch

71.8% of decks · synergy 0.70

Baba Lysaga, Night Witch requires three different permanent types in the graveyard to draw and drain — Liquimetal Torque turns any creature or land into an artifact, making that threshold trivially easy to hit each turn cycle.

02
Horobi, Death's Wail

Horobi, Death's Wail

67.9% of decks · synergy 0.65

Liquimetal Torque feeds directly into the Horobi, Death's Wail engine: once a permanent is an artifact, any targeting effect doubles as a removal spell, turning cheap cantrips and Equipment equips into unconditional destruction.

03
Memnarch

Memnarch

71.4% of decks · synergy 0.65

Memnarch's activated ability only steals artifacts, so Liquimetal Torque is the universal key — tag any permanent your opponents control and Memnarch can take it immediately for the standard activation cost.

04
Kibo, Uktabi Prince

Kibo, Uktabi Prince

67.4% of decks · synergy 0.64

Kibo, Uktabi Prince's banana tokens are artifacts, and Liquimetal Torque slots in as redundancy that can also convert Kibo himself or other permanents to fuel sacrifice synergies and artifact-matters payoffs across the deck.

05
Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter

Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter

60.4% of decks · synergy 0.59

Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter creates artifact tokens and wants to sacrifice them for value, so Liquimetal Torque serves double duty — early ramp and a way to turn any permanent into fodder for Jan Jansen's sacrifice outlets mid-game.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

modern

oathbreaker

Commander is where Liquimetal Torque earns its reputation: the artifact-conversion ability breaks open a huge range of combo lines, and the two-mana rock baseline means it's never a dead draw even in games where the combo never materialises. In Legacy and Vintage, it sees fringe play in Painter's Servant-style artifact synergy shells and occasionally as a Karn, the Great Creator enabler, but it's not a format staple in either. Modern has the tools to use it but better alternatives at the two-mana rock slot, so Liquimetal Torque mostly shows up in dedicated artifact combo builds rather than as a generic inclusion. It's not legal in Pioneer, Standard, or Pauper, so Commander and Oathbreaker are its natural homes, and Oathbreaker in particular rewards its combination of ramp and conversion in the same card.

Price Context

Current price

$4.83 cheap tier

At $4.83, Liquimetal Torque sits in the affordable-staple tier — meaningful enough to feel in the budget but not a barrier to entry for any deck that wants it. Given its combo utility and consistent demand across multiple commander archetypes, that price is unlikely to soften much.
