Sharding Sphinx card art
Sharding Sphinx turns every artifact combat damage into a free 1/1 flier, and in the right shell that trigger compounds fast enough to end games on its own. The six-mana cost is real, but Breath of Fury or Leonardo da Vinci can make that investment pay off the same turn it lands.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci

69.1% of decks · synergy 0.65

Leonardo da Vinci is the premier home for Sharding SphinxLeonardo da Vinci generates artifact tokens naturally, and every one of those tokens swinging in creates another Thopter, turning a modest board into an overwhelming air force within two combat steps.

02
Sai, Master Thopterist

Sai, Master Thopterist

58.6% of decks · synergy 0.55

Sai, Master Thopterist triggers off artifacts entering, and Sharding Sphinx closes the loop by converting those Thopters into more Thopters the moment they deal combat damage — the synergy is self-reinforcing and punishing to ignore.

03
Saheeli, the Gifted

Saheeli, the Gifted

46.4% of decks · synergy 0.45

Saheeli, the Gifted reduces the cost of big artifacts and floods the board with artifact tokens, giving Sharding Sphinx multiple attack triggers before opponents can stabilize.

04
Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer

40.8% of decks · synergy 0.39

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer wants a wide token board to convert en masse, and Sharding Sphinx supplies exactly that — a single good combat step can generate enough Thopters to fuel a Brudiclad kill the following turn.

05
Urza, Chief Artificer

Urza, Chief Artificer

37.6% of decks · synergy 0.35

Urza, Chief Artificer makes all artifact creatures menace, so the Thopters Sharding Sphinx produces are immediately harder to block, accelerating the feedback loop from annoying to lethal.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Commander is the only format where Sharding Sphinx consistently earns its slot — the longer game lets you reach six mana reliably, and artifact-token synergies are deep enough in blue to build entire decks around the trigger. In Legacy and Vintage, six mana for a win-more creature is too slow; those formats end before Sharding Sphinx's snowball effect matters. Modern is technically legal but practically unplayable for the same reason — there's no shell that wants a six-mana artifact payoff when the format ends on turns four or five. Oathbreaker follows Commander's logic closely, though the tighter pod size and lower life totals mean Sharding Sphinx can actually close games faster once it connects.

Price Context

Current price

$0.35 bulk tier

At $0.35, Sharding Sphinx is deep bulk — you're paying for the effect, not the card. Bulk rares at this price point tend to stay flat unless a new commander pushes demand, so don't expect movement; just pick up copies when you need them.
