Sanctum of Eternity card art
Sanctum of Eternity lets you bounce your commander to hand at instant speed for two mana, resetting enters-the-battlefield triggers and dodging targeted removal in one tap. Commanders like Zacama, Primal Calamity that untap lands on cast turn this into a repeatable mana engine, and even value-centric commanders like Lumra, Bellow of the Woods use it to retrigger their abilities on demand.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Lumra, Bellow of the Woods

Lumra, Bellow of the Woods

35.5% of decks · synergy 0.34

Lumra, Bellow of the Woods triggers on landfall and on entering the battlefield, so Sanctum of Eternity turns every land drop into another opportunity to rebuy that trigger without paying commander tax.

02
Zacama, Primal Calamity

Zacama, Primal Calamity

27.5% of decks · synergy 0.27

Zacama, Primal Calamity untaps all lands you control when it enters, which means Sanctum of Eternity's activation can pay for itself and then some — bounce Zacama, replay it, untap your lands, repeat.

03
Kardur, Doomscourge

Kardur, Doomscourge

25.0% of decks · synergy 0.23

Kardur, Doomscourge forces opponents to attack and drains life whenever an attacking creature dies, and Sanctum of Eternity lets you retrigger that enter-the-battlefield effect each combat step for ongoing chaos.

04
Massacre Girl

Massacre Girl

21.1% of decks · synergy 0.20

Massacre Girl's board-wipe trigger fires on entry, so Sanctum of Eternity gives you a repeatable reset button — bounce her in response to a threat, replay her, and fire the wipe again.

05
Zethi, Arcane Blademaster

Zethi, Arcane Blademaster

18.5% of decks · synergy 0.18

Zethi, Arcane Blademaster imprints instants and replays them on attack, and Sanctum of Eternity protects that investment by returning Zethi to hand before a removal spell resolves, preserving the imprinted cards.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

modern
pioneer

oathbreaker

Sanctum of Eternity is a Commander card in every meaningful sense — the mechanic of bouncing your commander is a concept that only exists in a format with a command zone. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but sees no play, since those formats don't run commanders and a colorless land that taps for colorless with a conditional activated ability offers nothing competitive. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where it has a real home, since the planeswalker-as-commander structure creates the same bounce-and-retrigger opportunities. If you're playing Commander and your commander has a relevant enters-the-battlefield ability, Sanctum of Eternity belongs in the conversation.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Erratic Portal does much of the same work — it bounces any creature, including your commander, for one mana, though it's a colorless mana sink rather than a land, which means it competes for spell slots instead of land slots. Sanctum of Eternity's land typing is a meaningful advantage: you can't counter a land drop, and it doesn't consume a slot in your artifact or spell base.

Price Context

Current price

$7.89 mid tier

At $7.89, Sanctum of Eternity sits in the mid tier — not a trivial include, but firmly within casual budget range for the effect it provides. Demand is driven almost entirely by Commander, and with a unique effect that hasn't been reprinted onto a cheaper card, the price is stable.
