Dross Scorpion card art
Dross Scorpion untaps an artifact whenever another artifact you control dies — and in the right shell, that single trigger is the engine that makes the whole machine run. Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter is the premier home: the loop between Jansen's token-sacrificing ability and Dross Scorpion's untap trigger is what turns a pile of artifacts into infinite mana or infinite death triggers.

38.5% of decks · synergy 0.38

Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter sacrifices Treasure and Construct tokens to fuel his own activated abilities, and Dross Scorpion untapping him after each sacrifice is what collapses a finite loop into an infinite one — nearly 40% of Jansen decks on EDHREC run it for exactly that reason.

Dross Scorpion is a Commander card, full stop. The combo density required to make a four-mana 3/3 with a conditional untap trigger worth a slot only exists in the 100-card singleton format, where Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter and similar artifact-sacrifice commanders are handing it a guaranteed role. In Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper it's technically legal but practically irrelevant — those formats move faster and have no interest in a creature this slow and this conditional. Pauper artifact synergy decks occasionally explore redundant untap effects, but Dross Scorpion's four-mana price tag is a hard sell when cheaper options exist.

Price Context

Current price

$0.34 bulk tier

At $0.34, Dross Scorpion is deep bulk — a combo piece priced like a throwaway common despite doing real work in artifact-sacrifice decks. That price is stable; it sees just enough Commander demand to keep it from hitting true bulk boxes, but not enough to push it past a dollar.
