Inexorable Tide turns every spell you cast into a proliferate trigger, which in counter-heavy decks means your threats grow, your planeswalkers ultimate faster, and your opponents' poison clocks tick without you spending extra mana. Five mana is the real cost — you need a board state worth proliferating or it does nothing the turn it lands. Pair it with Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus to double every trigger, and even Evolution Witness loops become threatening.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus
Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus doubles every proliferate trigger, so Inexorable Tide effectively proliferates twice on each spell — an engine that compounds every counter on the board at no extra mana.

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres
Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres draws cards whenever you proliferate, so Inexorable Tide converts each spell into card advantage, creating a self-fueling loop where more spells mean more draws mean more spells.

The Wise Mothman
The Wise Mothman spreads -1/-1 counters on opponents' creatures whenever you proliferate, so Inexorable Tide steadily depletes every enemy board just by playing your normal game.

Tidus, Yuna's Guardian
Tidus, Yuna's Guardian cares about stacking counters on your own permanents, and Inexorable Tide guarantees a proliferate hit on every spell, keeping the counter payoffs ticking without dedicating slots to dedicated proliferate spells.

Toxrill, the Corrosive
Toxrill, the Corrosive places -1/-1 counters on opponents' creatures each upkeep and converts those counters into Slug tokens when creatures die, so Inexorable Tide accelerates the removal clock by proliferating those counters mid-round.

Commander is where Inexorable Tide lives — the three-to-four player game gives you enough time to land a five-mana enchantment and enough targets to make each proliferate trigger matter. In competitive Commander it's too slow unless you're already deep in a dedicated proliferate or poison shell. Technically legal in Legacy, Modern, and Vintage, but five mana for a passive enchantment with no immediate impact doesn't compete with the pace of those formats. Oathbreaker is worth a look if your signature spell triggers proliferate synergies, though the 20-life starting total compresses the window.
