Gemstone Array converts excess mana — or charge counters from other sources — into any color you need, solving color fixing for decks that generate lots of colorless or single-color mana. The two-mana-per-counter conversion rate is steep, but commanders like Kilo, Apogee Mind that stockpile counters or produce burst mana make that cost irrelevant.

Gemstone Array is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it only sees real play in Commander. In Legacy and Vintage the conversion rate is far too slow for formats where the game ends before the Array pays off. Modern has faster and more efficient color fixing at every point on the curve. Commander is where Gemstone Array earns its slot — long games, big mana, and combo shells that care about charge counters all give it room to operate.
