Hateful Eidolon turns every Aura you use to kill a creature into a free card, which makes it one of the most efficient draw engines available to black enchantment decks. Killian, Decisive Mentor and Tatsunari, Toad Rider both run it precisely because their gameplans already involve stacking Auras — the draw is essentially a zero-cost upgrade.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Killian, Decisive Mentor
Killian, Decisive Mentor is the premier Hateful Eidolon commander — he reduces the cost of Auras, which means you're jamming more of them per turn, and every removal Aura that kills something draws a card off Hateful Eidolon, turning the interaction into a self-sustaining draw engine.

Eriette of the Charmed Apple
Eriette of the Charmed Apple wins by loading up opponents' creatures with Auras, and Hateful Eidolon ensures that any enchanted creature that dies — whether through combat or removal — replaces itself immediately in hand.

Eriette, the Beguiler
Eriette, the Beguiler steals and sacrifices opponents' enchanted creatures as part of her core loop, making Hateful Eidolon a near-automatic include — each stolen creature that dies while Aura-laden draws a card.

Killian, Ink Duelist
Killian, Ink Duelist discounts Auras and wants to stack them on creatures for lifelink and menace synergies, so Hateful Eidolon converts every removal Aura or combat death into card advantage without adding any extra mana investment.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Hateful Eidolon is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker. Commander is its natural home — enchantress and Aura-based strategies run enough targeted removal Auras that Hateful Eidolon routinely draws multiple cards per game at minimal cost. In Modern and Pioneer it's a fringe consideration for dedicated Aura shells, but competing with faster threats and the absence of a wide removal-Aura suite makes it inconsistent outside of niche brews. Legacy and Vintage move too fast for a one-mana 1/1 to matter without an already-established Aura engine, so it rarely sees play there.

$0.28 bulk tier
At $0.28, Hateful Eidolon is deep bulk — the price reflects supply, not power level. Given its near-80% inclusion rate in Killian, Decisive Mentor decks and strong representation across multiple Orzhov commanders, there's no reason to expect it to drop further, but it's not a spec target either — just grab a copy and sleeve it.
