Dockside Chef turns any creature sacrifice into a cantrip — one mana, attached to your board, and it doesn't tap to use. In sacrifice-heavy builds like Tatsunari, Toad Rider or Rendmaw, Creaking Nest, that translates to a steady draw engine that costs almost nothing to install.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Rendmaw, Creaking Nest
Rendmaw, Creaking Nest is the natural home — its triggered ability generates a constant stream of Egg tokens to sacrifice, and Dockside Chef converts every one of those Eggs into a card before they even hit the graveyard.

Gyome, Master Chef
Gyome, Master Chef produces Food tokens every turn, and Dockside Chef gives those Foods a second use: crack them to draw instead of gain life whenever the card advantage matters more than the lifegain.

Greasefang, Okiba Boss
Greasefang, Okiba Boss needs cards in the graveyard and cards in hand simultaneously, and Dockside Chef quietly bridges both goals by letting you churn through creatures on the way to finding your key Vehicle.

Baba Lysaga, Night Witch
Baba Lysaga, Night Witch already wants three permanent types in the graveyard each turn, and Dockside Chef lets the sacrifice feeds that engine while paying you back in cards rather than just tempo.

Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker
Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker returns creatures with power one or less at end of turn, so every sacrifice loop under Shirei also becomes a draw loop when Dockside Chef is on board.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Dockside Chef earns its keep — 100-card singleton rewards cheap, repeatable engines, and a one-mana artifact that draws on each creature sacrifice is exactly the glue those decks want. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer it's legal but rarely seen, because dedicated sacrifice decks there have faster, more redundant draw options and can't lean on the same critical mass of token generators. Legacy and Vintage have enough broken alternatives that Dockside Chef never enters the conversation. Stick to Commander.

$0.26 bulk tier
At $0.26, Dockside Chef is bulk — pick up as many as you need without a second thought. Bulk commons and uncommons at this synergy level rarely spike unless they land on a ban list or get reprinted into a precon staple slot, so there's no urgency beyond just owning the copies your decks require.
