Ashiok's Reaper card art
Ashiok's Reaper puts a 3/2 lifelinker on board and punishes enchantment exits with forced discards — the problem is that five mana is a lot to ask for a body that doesn't close games on its own. Pair it with Mortuary or slot it under Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor and the discard trigger starts firing every turn; without that engine, it's just an expensive beater.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor

Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor

51.0% of decks · synergy 0.50

Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor passes curses around the table constantly, and every time one leaves play on an opponent's side, Ashiok's Reaper fires a discard trigger — in this deck it's less a finisher and more a persistent tax on the whole table.

02
Ghen, Arcanum Weaver

Ghen, Arcanum Weaver

40.1% of decks · synergy 0.40

Ghen, Arcanum Weaver's activated ability sacrifices enchantments on demand, which means Ashiok's Reaper can generate discard triggers on your own schedule rather than waiting for opponents to interact.

03
Eriette of the Charmed Apple

Eriette of the Charmed Apple

38.3% of decks · synergy 0.36

Eriette of the Charmed Apple builds a board of Auras enchanting opponents' creatures, and those Auras fall off whenever the creatures die — Ashiok's Reaper turns each of those exits into a forced discard, layering hand pressure on top of Eriette's life-drain.

04
Daxos the Returned

Daxos the Returned

15.3% of decks · synergy 0.13

Daxos the Returned creates experience counters off enchantments entering the battlefield, so the deck already runs a high enchantment density; Ashiok's Reaper rewards that density by punishing the inevitable removal and wipes with discards.

05
Eriette, the Beguiler

Eriette, the Beguiler

12.7% of decks · synergy 0.12

Eriette, the Beguiler wants enchanted creatures swinging into opponents, and the Auras that enable that plan will eventually get answered — Ashiok's Reaper converts those losses into hand disruption so removal trades down in value.

Ashiok's Reaper is legal across every major format but only actually shows up in Commander, and that's the right read — constructed formats want more reliable discard engines for far less mana. In Commander, the trigger being tied to enchantments leaving play means the card ranges from mediocre to genuinely oppressive depending on your commander; enchantment-heavy lists like Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor or Ghen, Arcanum Weaver can fire multiple triggers per turn cycle, while a generic goodstuff deck gets almost nothing from it. Outside Commander, five mana for a 3/2 lifelinker with a conditional trigger is simply not competitive in Legacy, Modern, or Pioneer.

Price Context

Current price

$0.26 bulk tier

At $0.26, Ashiok's Reaper is deep bulk — you'll find it in a common box or as throw-in in any trade. That price is stable because demand is narrow and the card sees no play outside dedicated enchantment Commander builds, so don't expect movement in either direction.
