Lore Drakkis card art
Lore Drakkis enters the battlefield and immediately rebuy the instant or sorcery with the highest mana value in your graveyard — no activation, no additional cost, just value stapled to a 3/2 body with mutate. The cost is that it demands a mutate shell to fire reliably, which is why you almost never see it outside of commanders like Illuna, Apex of Wishes and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker combo builds that already want the graveyard recursion axis.

Illuna, Apex of Wishes

62.7% of decks · synergy 0.62

Illuna, Apex of Wishes is the natural home for Lore Drakkis because the deck is already built around mutating onto non-token permanents and hitting value off the top of the library — Lore Drakkis slots in as a free spell-recursion trigger the moment it mutates onto any creature in the stack, letting the deck rebuy key setup spells like Shark Typhoon or whatever high-value instant missed the previous turn.

In Commander, Lore Drakkis is a niche but legitimate piece in dedicated mutate builds — specifically those running Illuna, Apex of Wishes — where the free instant or sorcery recursion on a mutate trigger can rebuy ramp, removal, or combo enablers at no extra cost. Outside of mutate synergy, it's too parasitic to slot into generic spellslinger decks that would rather run Snapcaster Mage or Underworld Breach. In Legacy and Vintage, the bar for a three-mana 3/2 with a conditional triggered ability is simply too high when the formats offer faster, unconditional recursion engines. Modern and Pioneer are similarly unkind — the mutate mechanic never found a home in those formats, and Lore Drakkis without a mutate shell is just an underpowered beater.

Price Context

Current price

$0.25 bulk tier

At $0.25, Lore Drakkis sits firmly in bulk territory, which reflects both its narrow playability and the general softness of mutate-mechanic cards outside dedicated Commander builds. Don't expect the price to move — supply is high and demand is confined to a small slice of Illuna, Apex of Wishes decks — but as a pickup it's essentially free, so there's no reason to hesitate if the deck calls for it.
