Hushwing Gryff card art
Hushwing Gryff shuts off every enters-the-battlefield trigger on the board the moment it lands — flash means it can do that at instant speed, right through an opponent's combo turn. At three mana for a 2/1 flier that pairs naturally with stax staples like Lavinia, Azorius Renegade and locks out synergy engines like Intruder Alarm, the rate is exceptional.

Lavinia, Azorius Renegade

16.9% of decks · synergy 0.16

Lavinia, Azorius Renegade already punishes the game actions that power most Commander strategies, and Hushwing Gryff extends that suppression layer to ETB triggers — together they cover enough ground that creature-based combo lines become almost entirely non-functional.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

In Commander, Hushwing Gryff is a role-player in any white-blue stax or hatebear shell — the format is so ETB-dependent that flash-deploying it in response to a Craterhoof Behemoth or Thassa's Oracle trigger can just end a game. In Modern and Legacy, it competes with Torpor Orb for the same slot, and the body plus flash give it an edge in creature-heavy metas where artifact removal is more common than enchantment removal. Pioneer sees less use for it since the ETB density is lower and more linear threats exist, but it's still legal and occasionally relevant against Eldrazi or flicker strategies. Across every constructed format where it's legal, its ceiling is high enough to warrant a sideboard slot in any deck that can cast it.

Price Context

Current price

$0.39 bulk tier

At $0.39, Hushwing Gryff is firmly bulk, which makes it one of the most cost-efficient pieces of ETB hate available. The price reflects reprint availability more than demand — it sees consistent play in stax builds, so picking up copies now is straightforward and sensible.
