Fall of the Thran destroys every land on the battlefield, then hands each opponent two land cards from their graveyard over the following two turns — a symmetrical wipe that punishes you almost as much as the table unless you've built around it. The payoff is real, but it demands a specific shell: pair it with Emeria Shepherd or similar recursion and the asymmetry snaps firmly in your favor.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Fall of the Thran is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it only shows up with any regularity in Commander — the format where six mana is affordable and the politics of 'everyone loses their lands' can be managed or even weaponized. In Legacy and Vintage the cost is simply too high and faster interaction makes land destruction redundant. Modern and Pioneer offer more efficient land disruption at lower mana values, leaving Fall of the Thran without a practical home in those formats.
