Evolution Sage card art
Evolution Sage turns every land drop into a proliferate trigger, which in a counter-heavy deck means your threats grow every single turn for free. The cost is a three-mana 3/2 with no immediate impact — but pair it with Life and Limb to turn every Saproling into a Forest and the triggers become near-continuous, and Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres converts each proliferate into a draw, making the Sage a card-advantage engine on legs.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres

86.0% of decks · synergy 0.76

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres draws a card for each proliferate trigger, so Evolution Sage turns every fetchland or ramp spell into card advantage — the two cards form a self-sustaining value loop that accelerates both your board state and your hand.

02
Auntie Ool, Cursewretch

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch

82.1% of decks · synergy 0.74

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch spreads -1/-1 counters as a control mechanism, and Evolution Sage proliferates those counters onto each opponent's creatures with every land drop, quietly shrinking entire boards without spending extra cards.

03
Carth the Lion

Carth the Lion

78.8% of decks · synergy 0.71

Carth the Lion incentivizes stacking loyalty on planeswalkers, and Evolution Sage delivers free loyalty counters every time a land enters — that's often enough to tick a planeswalker straight to its ultimate without ever activating it normally.

04
Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa

Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa

73.8% of decks · synergy 0.67

Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa runs on poison and proliferate synergies, and Evolution Sage adds a redundant, low-cost proliferate source that keeps poison counters climbing on opponents even in turns where Ixhel is answered or unavailable.

05
Kros, Defense Contractor

Kros, Defense Contractor

71.7% of decks · synergy 0.65

Kros, Defense Contractor builds goad counters and +1/+1 counters simultaneously, and Evolution Sage proliferates both simultaneously with each land, meaning a single Sage can keep your board growing and your opponents' creatures pointed away from you every turn.

Evolution Sage is a Commander card — full stop. The proliferate trigger fires on landfall, which in a 100-card singleton format stuffed with ramp and fetch effects means it triggers multiple times per turn cycle, compounding counters of every kind faster than most decks can interact. In Modern and Pioneer it's legal but nearly invisible: three mana for a 3/2 with no enters-the-battlefield effect is too slow when the formats demand immediate board impact, and proliferate strategies there lack the density of counter payoffs Commander provides. Legacy and Vintage have no interest in it for the same reasons, compounded by the fact that land-based triggers are inconsistent at those speeds. If you're sleeving it up, it's going in a Commander deck.

Pricing data for Evolution Sage isn't currently available in this context — check Scryfall or your preferred vendor for a live number. Given its heavy representation across proliferate commanders and the relatively low print run of War of the Spark, it has historically settled in the $1–3 range, making it an easy inclusion decision if you're in the right shell.
