Essence Filter wipes all enchantments from the board for three mana — everything, yours and theirs, gone — which is a line of effect most green removal can't touch. The cost is symmetry: running it into your own Rhystic Study or Sylvan Library hurts, but if you're on the receiving end of a Fractured Identity or a Smothering Tithe, three mana to reset the enchantment landscape is a steal.

Commander is where Essence Filter earns its slot, specifically in green decks that run light on enchantments themselves but face tables full of them — Smothering Tithe, Rhystic Study, and Propaganda are everywhere, and most green removal lines skip enchantments entirely. In Legacy and Vintage, dedicated enchantment hate already has stiff competition from Disenchant, Mox-accelerated answers, and Enchantress mirrors that don't want self-destruction effects, so Essence Filter rarely makes the cut. Pauper is the other format worth a look — enchantment-based control shells are real there, and a three-mana mass answer at common is genuinely uncommon. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: if your signature spell or planeswalker is threatened by an enchantment lock, Essence Filter is clean and decisive.
