Elixir of Immortality does two things on the same card: it gains you 5 life and shuffles your entire graveyard back into your library for one mana to activate, making it one of the cheapest insurance policies in Commander against mill, self-mill blowouts, and library-exhaustion. Commanders like Magda, Brazen Outlaw that churn through artifacts and Queen Kayla bin-Kroog that dump cards into the graveyard at speed both treat it as a reset button that costs almost nothing to include.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Queen Kayla bin-Kroog
Queen Kayla bin-Kroog pitches artifacts and creatures straight from hand to graveyard, and Elixir of Immortality recycles that entire pile back into the library so the engine never runs dry.

Will, Scion of Peace
Will, Scion of Peace cares about gaining life, and Elixir of Immortality provides a repeatable 5-life shot while also preventing library exhaustion in decks that draw aggressively.

Maralen of the Mornsong
Maralen of the Mornsong locks opponents out of drawing, which means the game can go long — Elixir of Immortality ensures Maralen's controller never decks themselves while the lock is in place.

Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain
Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain draws a card for every historic spell cast, burning through the library fast; Elixir of Immortality is the safety valve that shuffles spent resources back in before the deck runs out of gas.

Arjun, the Shifting Flame
Arjun, the Shifting Flame replaces your hand with the top of your library every time you cast a spell, cycling through cards at a rate that can empty the library surprisingly quickly — Elixir of Immortality keeps that loop going indefinitely.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Elixir of Immortality sees essentially no competitive play in Legacy, Modern, or Pioneer — formats where a one-mana artifact that gains 5 life and shuffles your graveyard is simply too slow and too low-impact compared to what those formats demand. In Vintage it is technically legal but irrelevant; the graveyard synergies and combo density there move far faster than a two-mana-to-activate reset can address. Commander is where Elixir of Immortality earns its slot: 100-card singleton means decks run out of library more often, graveyard hate is universal, and a colorless one-drop that answers both threats while buying time fits into virtually any strategy.
