Dralnu, Lich Lord

Legendary Creature — Zombie Wizard

If damage would be dealt to Dralnu, sacrifice that many permanents instead.
{T}: Target instant or sorcery card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn. The flashback cost is equal to its mana cost. (You may cast that card from your graveyard for its flashback cost. Then exile it.)

Dralnu, Lich Lord card art
Dralnu, Lich Lord turns every instant and sorcery in your graveyard into a Flashback outlet at the cost of tapping him — the catch is that any damage dealt to him instead sacrifices that many permanents, making a single Pyroclasm a board-wipe and a half. Pair him with Isochron Scepter to abuse the flashback engine at low risk, or cage his ability through Mairsil, the Pretender to dodge the punishing damage clause entirely.

Mairsil, the Pretender cages Dralnu, Lich Lord to poach the flashback ability without inheriting the self-sacrifice drawback — that separation of upside from downside is the whole reason Dralnu shows up in roughly 14% of Mairsil lists.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Dralnu, Lich Lord actually lives — the 100-card singleton format gives you enough instants and sorceries to make repeated flashback meaningful, and political play lets you manage the damage clause more carefully than in a 1v1 race. In Legacy and Vintage he's legal but effectively invisible; the damage punishment is crippling in formats where Lightning Bolt and Pyroclasm are everywhere, and Snapcaster Mage does the flashback job without strapping a lightning rod to your board. Oathbreaker is theoretically viable if the signature spell lines up, but the four-mana cost and fragility make him a steep investment for a 60-card, lower-life-total environment.

Price Context

Current price

$0.28 bulk tier

At $0.28, Dralnu, Lich Lord is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a bargain bin without a second thought. The price is stable for the same reason it's low: demand is narrow and supply is plentiful, so don't expect movement in either direction.
