Expropriate

Sorcery

Council's dilemma — Starting with you, each player votes for time or money. For each time vote, take an extra turn after this one. For each money vote, choose a permanent owned by the voter and gain control of it. Exile Expropriate.

Expropriate card art
Expropriate resolves and you either take an extra turn for every opponent who voted Time or steal a permanent from every opponent who voted Money — often both. Nine mana is the cost, and the question isn't whether it's worth it; it's whether you can cast it twice with Panoptic Mirror or dodge the mana requirement entirely through Narset, Enlightened Master.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

Expropriate is legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, but banned in Oathbreaker — which tells you everything about how warped the spell is when your commander can reliably put it into play for free. In Legacy and Vintage it sees virtually no play; nine mana is a non-starter in formats where the game ends on turn one or two. Commander is where Expropriate lives, because the format's slower clock and political voting dynamic occasionally produce a vote split that feels fair even when the outcome isn't — and because blue ramp and extra-turn loops make nine mana reachable by mid-game.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Narset, Enlightened Master

Narset, Enlightened Master

36.4% of decks · synergy 0.35

Narset, Enlightened Master attacks, exiles Expropriate off the top, and casts it for free — no nine-mana requirement, no telegraphing, just an immediate vote that Narset almost always wins on both counts.

02
Círdan the Shipwright

Círdan the Shipwright

34.0% of decks · synergy 0.32

Círdan the Shipwright accelerates into the late game faster than most blue commanders, and Expropriate at nine mana is exactly the kind of haymaker a ring-powered, card-advantage engine wants to close with.

03
Tivit, Seller of Secrets

Tivit, Seller of Secrets

30.8% of decks · synergy 0.29

Tivit, Seller of Secrets runs deep on vote and council's dilemma effects, making Expropriate a thematic and mechanical centerpiece — every opponent voting Money still hands you a permanent, and a Time vote stacks neatly with Tivit's own combat trigger.

04
Hidetsugu and Kairi

Hidetsugu and Kairi

22.1% of decks · synergy 0.21

Hidetsugu and Kairi can put Expropriate directly into play off its death trigger if it's sitting on top of the library, dodging the mana cost entirely and catching opponents completely off guard.
