Diamond Valley card art
Diamond Valley converts creature deaths into life totals directly on the land — no mana tax, no spell slot spent, just a free sacrifice outlet that gains you life whenever you need it. Pair it with Outrider en-Kor's zero-cost damage redirection and you have an infinite life engine sitting right in your land base.

Format Analysis

Diamond Valley is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker — and Commander is where it sees the most play. In Commander, a free sacrifice outlet stapled to a land is genuinely hard to answer; opponents have to dedicate removal to a land to stop it, and most decks won't. In Legacy and Vintage, Diamond Valley is too slow relative to the format's combo density and sees essentially no competitive play. Oathbreaker is a smaller format where the life gain can matter more in a compressed game, but Diamond Valley's real home remains 100-card Commander tables where sacrifice synergies, aristocrats payoffs, and infinite life combos are ubiquitous.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Diamond Valley's free sacrifice-and-gain effect on a land is nearly impossible to fully replicate at low cost, but Witch's Cottage and High Market get you a sacrifce outlet on a land for zero dollars — High Market in particular is the closest structural match, just without the life gain scaling with the creature's toughness. If the life gain is the point, Martyr's Cause or Ashnod's Altar plus a dedicated life gain piece spread the function across two cards and stay well under $5 combined, at the expense of the tidy land-slot efficiency that makes Diamond Valley worth running.

Price Context

Current price

$693.33 premium tier

At $693.33, Diamond Valley sits firmly in the reserved-list premium tier — this is a card whose price is driven by scarcity, not reprint risk, since it cannot be reprinted under Wizards' current policy. It holds value the way reserved-list staples do: steadily, with no ceiling risk from reprints, but also with liquidity that depends entirely on how many Commander players want this specific effect badly enough to spend $700 on a land.
