Chandra, Torch of Defiance card art
Chandra, Torch of Defiance hits the board doing four distinct things — ramp, card advantage, removal, and a win condition — for four mana, which is an absurd rate for a planeswalker. In Commander, she slots cleanly into any red shell that wants mana acceleration or a late-game ultimate, and The Chain Veil turns her into a one-card engine alongside Commodore Guff and similar loyalty-stacking commanders.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Commodore Guff

Commodore Guff

87.9% of decks · synergy 0.84

Commodore Guff's passive adds a loyalty counter to every other planeswalker you control each turn, which means Chandra, Torch of Defiance ticks toward her emblem faster than the text on her card suggests — and Guff's tutor ability finds her in the first place.

02

Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh

92.0% of decks · synergy 0.80

Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh decks run every planeswalker named Chandra they can find, and Chandra, Torch of Defiance is the best of the lot — she provides the mana acceleration and removal that the tribal shell needs to keep the board clear while assembling its payoffs.

03
Loot, the Key to Everything

Loot, the Key to Everything

39.6% of decks · synergy 0.38

Loot, the Key to Everything churns through permanents quickly, and Chandra, Torch of Defiance supplies immediate value the turn she lands — the ramp ability accelerates Loot's ability to deploy multiple permanents in a single turn cycle.

04
Solphim, Mayhem Dominus

Solphim, Mayhem Dominus

45.2% of decks · synergy 0.33

Solphim, Mayhem Dominus doubles noncombat damage, which means Chandra, Torch of Defiance's one-damage removal tick becomes two and her ultimate's emblem deals four per spell instead of two — the synergy is multiplicative, not additive.

05
Torbran, Thane of Red Fell

Torbran, Thane of Red Fell

44.6% of decks · synergy 0.33

Torbran, Thane of Red Fell adds two to every red source's damage, so Chandra, Torch of Defiance's pinging minus ability jumps from one to three and each emblem trigger hits for four — she's a removal piece and a win condition simultaneously in his deck.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

In Commander, Chandra, Torch of Defiance is a legitimate role-player: she ramps the turn she enters, survives at three loyalty to threaten another activation, and her emblem is a realistic win condition in planeswalker-heavy builds. In Pioneer and Modern, she saw serious competitive play as a midrange value engine, but both formats have moved fast enough that a four-mana planeswalker without immediate protection struggles to keep up in the current metagame. Legacy and Vintage can legally run her, but neither format has much use for a four-mana card with no broken interaction. Oathbreaker is arguably her best home outside Commander — as the oathbreaker herself, every game revolves around extracting maximum value from her four abilities.

Price Context

Current price

$2.84 cheap tier

At $2.84, Chandra, Torch of Defiance is firmly in bulk-rare territory for a card that was once a $50 planeswalker, and that price reflects multiple reprints rather than any drop in playability. It's an easy inclusion at this cost — you're getting one of the most versatile red four-drops in Commander for the price of a pack.
