Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim is a two-mana 2/3 deathtouch that converts life into removal, then converts a 40-life threshold into mass exile — two distinct modes on one body for. The catch is that the exile ability asks you to be at 40 life while your opponents are trying to kill you, which is a real build-around constraint, but Daru Spiritualist and similar life-padding pieces make it trivially achievable and open a combo kill in the process. Orah, Skyclave Hierophant decks run her in over 70% of lists for exactly that reason.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Orah, Skyclave Hierophant
Orah, Skyclave Hierophant is a Cleric tribal engine, and Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim is a Cleric who sacrifices other Clerics to generate value — the tribal overlap is near-perfect, and Ayli's life threshold becomes trivial once Orah is recurring life-gain Clerics from the graveyard each combat.

Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness
Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness drains life from opponents whenever a creature dies under his effect, which means Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim's sacrifice outlet turns every creature death into life padding — Ayli feeds Ardbert's engine while Ardbert feeds Ayli's threshold.

Ratadrabik of Urborg
Ratadrabik of Urborg creates token copies of legendary creatures that die, so sacrificing a legend to Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim both fuels her removal and puts a token back into play — a clean sacrifice loop that never runs dry.

Amalia Benavides Aguirre
Amalia Benavides Aguirre triggers off lifegain and wants a sacrifice outlet to reset her explore loop before it wipes the board; Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim provides exactly that outlet while gaining life in the process, tightening the combo window.

Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim
Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim drains opponents whenever a creature enters or dies, so Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim's sacrifice outlet becomes a repeatable drain trigger — every activation is both removal and life loss for the table.
Format Analysis

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim does her best work — 40 starting life closes the gap to her exile threshold quickly, and the 99-card singleton format is full of life-gain Clerics that trigger her naturally. In Legacy and Vintage, she's legal but doesn't compete with what those formats are doing at two mana; deathtouch and a tap-to-sacrifice aren't impactful enough to justify the slot. Modern and Pioneer are similarly indifferent — there's no life-gain shell that needs her badly enough to cut a dedicated slot, and her power ceiling in those formats is just a medium-value creature. Oathbreaker gives her a niche if she's the spellcaster supporting a life-gain signature spell, but it's a narrow use case.

Current price
$0.63 bulk tier
At $0.63, Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim is firmly bulk — cheap enough to slot into any Orzhov or Cleric list without a second thought. That price has stayed low because she sees almost no competitive constructed play, but for Commander the value-per-dollar is exceptional given how much work she does as a sacrifice outlet and win condition in the right shell.
