Ink-Treader (4-color, no black) Commanders
Four-color without black — the Ink-Treader identity of white, blue, red, and green — is the most resource-rich combination in Commander. Cutting black means giving up tutors, reanimation, and targeted removal, but everything it loses in consistency it more than compensates for with raw card advantage, landfall value, token generation, and the ability to rebuild after any board state.
The two commanders who define the archetype show how different two decks in the same color identity can look. Aragorn, the Uniter rewards running a multiracial creature suite, generating free spells whenever white, blue, red, or green creatures enter play — it's a value engine that wants density of small creatures and cross-tribal synergies rather than a single dominant tribe. Omnath, Locus of Creation is structurally different: it converts land drops directly into life gain, card draw, and direct damage, making it one of the most efficient landfall payoffs ever printed. Omnath punishes fair decks with a pace of resource generation that most tables aren't equipped to match.
What unites these commanders isn't a single game plan — it's access to the most powerful acceleration in the format. Green ramp gets you to four colors consistently by turn three or four. Blue provides interaction and card selection. White offers board wipes and enchantment-based engines. Red adds speed and direct damage to close games that would otherwise stall.
The practical challenge of Ink-Treader is mana base construction. Fixing four colors without black means leaning heavily on fetch lands, triomes, shocklands, and lands that tap for multiple colors — a mana base that often costs more than the rest of the deck combined. Budget builds are genuinely harder here than in two- or three-color identities, and color screw is a real failure mode when the fixing isn't tight.
The payoff for solving that problem is a color combination that almost never runs out of things to do. Omnath, Locus of Creation generates value on every land drop; Aragorn, the Uniter turns every creature spell into a bonus. Both reward a high density of permanents and punish decks that try to answer every threat individually. At its ceiling, the Ink-Treader identity plays a grindy midrange game that overwhelms slower tables and can combo-close against faster ones — a profile that makes it consistently one of the most-built four-color identities in the format.
