GOLGARI (BG) · 50 COMMANDERS

Golgari (BG) Commanders

Golgari is the color identity of attrition, recursion, and inevitability. Black and green together do something no other two-color pair does as efficiently: they treat the graveyard as a resource rather than a destination, generate value from death triggers, and use that accumulated advantage to grind every opponent into the dirt. Golgari decks don't typically win through a single explosive turn — they win because they've been accruing value since turn two and never stopped.

The most-built Golgari commander right now is Lathril, Blade of the Elves, which channels the identity's token generation into an elf tribal package capable of ending games on the spot with her drain ability. Chatterfang, Squirrel General operates on similar token logic but warps the game further by copying every other token produced, turning any token synergy in the 99 into a Squirrel flood. Both commanders represent Golgari at its widest — going tall on board presence and converting it into damage or life loss.

Meren of Clan Nel Toth is the foundational Golgari text. She rewards you for creatures dying by letting you recur them, creating a loop of sacrifice and return that generates perpetual card advantage and eventually locks opponents out through sheer inevitability. Every creature becomes a threat that has to be answered twice. The Gitrog Monster approaches the same philosophy from a land angle — feeding the graveyard with land drops to draw cards and fuel explosive combo sequences, often ending in an infinite loop with a discard outlet.

Ygra, Eater of All pushes Golgari into a stranger direction, turning every creature that dies into a Food token and using that life gain as a combo enabler. Shelob, Child of Ungoliant takes the fight-and-devour angle: creatures that die to Shelob become Food, and she grows on every kill, creating a midrange gameplan that scales into a late-game threat naturally. High Perfect Morcant and Rendmaw, Creaking Nest are newer additions to the roster that lean into egg, creature-type, and graveyard synergies, continuing the identity's tradition of building engines from redundant death and entry triggers.

What holds all of these together is the core Golgari loop: put things in the graveyard, get value when they die, return them when profitable, repeat until opponents are out of answers. Green provides the mana and the bodies; black provides the recursion, removal, and willingness to sacrifice anything. The identity has no shortage of tutors or card advantage, which is why Golgari commanders consistently appear at higher power levels without needing the fastest mana in the format. The price for all of this inevitability is speed — Golgari rarely closes games before turn six, and it can struggle when opponents apply pressure faster than the engine assembles.
