Colorless Commanders

Colorless commanders impose a hard constraint and reward it: every card in the 99 must function without a color identity, which means the entire deck is built from artifacts, Eldrazi, and the small pool of colorless utility spells. That restriction is the point. The tradeoff for giving up access to any color's removal, card draw, and interaction is a suite of the most powerful mana rocks in the format and the ability to cast the biggest creatures in the game ahead of schedule.

Zhulodok, Void Gorger is the most-built colorless commander by a wide margin, and the reason is straightforward: cascading twice off colorless spells with mana value seven or greater turns every expensive Eldrazi into two more expensive Eldrazi. Kozilek, the Great Distortion fills a similar role — a fourteen-mana threat that also refills your hand and counters spells on the way in. Both strategies live and die by mana acceleration, which means Karn, Legacy Reforged becomes one of the most important commanders in the space: his static ability turns every artifact into a mana source, letting the deck go from zero to fully operational in a few turns.

Not every colorless commander is trying to cast ten-drops. Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut turns all your artifact creatures into 5/3 tramplers, which is a very different game plan — wide rather than tall, focused on Construct tokens and board pressure instead of single haymaker threats. Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter gives the deck a flash dimension, letting you hold up interaction and deploy threats at end of turn. Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate and Traxos, Scourge of Kroog both reward leaning hard into colorless creatures specifically, pushing the archetype toward a tribal-adjacent shell.

The structural weakness of every colorless deck is the same: targeted removal and counterspells are nearly impossible to include at parity with colored decks. The format's best interaction — Swords to Plowshares, Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift — is off the table entirely. What colorless gets instead is Eldrazi annihilator triggers, artifact-based board wipes, and the raw momentum of casting multiple seven-plus mana spells in a single turn. The deck either snowballs fast enough that interaction becomes irrelevant, or it doesn't.
