The engine recurs itself: Returned Pastcaller enters, returns Dark Ritual to hand; Phyrexian Altar cashes in the Pastcaller for mana; The Cauldron of Eternity queues it back to the bottom of the library; Grenzo's 2-mana activation flips it back into play. Each iteration costs 3 mana and nets 4 — three from Dark Ritual, one from the Altar sacrifice — leaving a surplus that compounds into infinite mana after the first loop. Mardu reanimator shells running Grenzo, Dungeon Warden as commander get to exploit the infinite Grenzo activations to pull every creature out of the library as a bonus.

Recipe

How it works

01

Prerequisites

Grenzo has power 2 or greater.

02

Steps

  1. Cast Dark Ritual by paying {B}, adding {B}{B}{B}.
  2. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing Returned Pastcaller, adding one mana of any color.
  3. When Returned Pastcaller dies, The Cauldron of Eternity triggers, putting Returned Pastcaller from your graveyard onto the bottom of your library.
  4. Activate Grenzo by paying {2}, putting Returned Pastcaller from the bottom of your library into your graveyard, and then putting it onto the battlefield.
  5. When Returned Pastcaller enters the battlefield, it triggers, returning Dark Ritual from your graveyard to your hand.
  6. Repeat.
  7. Once you have infinite mana, you may activate Grenzo's ability any number of times.

03

Result

Infinite colored mana; Infinite death triggers; Infinite ETB; Infinite LTB; Infinite magecraft triggers; Infinite sacrifice triggers; Infinite storm count; Put a selection of creature cards from your library onto the battlefield

Variations

Cheaper, tighter, alternate lines

Any 0- or 1-mana creature with a relevant ETB can slot into the Pastcaller role if the reanimation trigger chain can be preserved, but Returned Pastcaller's built-in instant-speed recursion of a sorcery is what makes Dark Ritual the clean mana source here — replace it only if another net-positive ritual like Cabal Ritual is available. The combo is five pieces assembled simultaneously, which is its real liability; lean on Buried Alive, Entomb, and Demonic Tutor to compress setup, and have Walking Ballista or Zulaport Cutthroat waiting as the kill since infinite mana alone doesn't close the game.
