The Face of Boe card art
The Face of Boe turns any life-gain trigger into a repeatable card-draw engine — three life spent draws a card, which is an absurd rate when you're generating life in bulk. The companion cost is real, but in a dedicated life-gain shell built around The Tenth Doctor // Rose Tyler or Auriok Salvagers loops, the deckbuilding constraint is barely felt.

The Tenth Doctor // Rose Tyler is the natural home for The Face of Boe — the Doctor's adventure mechanic generates life-gain triggers constantly, and The Face of Boe converts every one of those triggers into card advantage, turning a flavor match into a genuine engine.

Commander is where The Face of Boe does its best work — 40 life and multiplayer board states mean plenty of time to convert the life-to-draw ability into a commanding card-advantage lead. Legacy and Vintage legality is technically there, but a three-mana companion with a life-gain deckbuilding restriction has no competitive footing in either format. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home for similar reasons as Commander: higher starting life and synergy-forward deckbuilding reward the engine more than fast, low-to-the-ground formats would.
