Sundering Growth card art
Sundering Growth destroys an artifact or enchantment and populates — two meaningful board effects stapled to a two-mana instant. In any deck that makes tokens, this is a strict upgrade over Disenchant, and Ghired, Conclave Exile running it at an 80% clip confirms the verdict.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Ghired, Conclave Exile

Ghired, Conclave Exile

80.4% of decks · synergy 0.74

Ghired, Conclave Exile is built around populating powerful tokens, so Sundering Growth's removal is essentially free — you're paying two mana to answer a threat and copy whatever your best creature token already is.

02
Trostani, Selesnya's Voice

Trostani, Selesnya's Voice

65.2% of decks · synergy 0.57

Trostani, Selesnya's Voice gains life off every token that enters, so the populate trigger from Sundering Growth isn't just board presence — it's another life-gain event on top of removing a problem permanent.

04
Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds

Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds

47.4% of decks · synergy 0.41

Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds copies spells when creatures attack, and a wide token board is how that engine fires — Sundering Growth keeps the board clear while adding to the creature count that makes the whole strategy work.

05
Atla Palani, Nest Tender

Atla Palani, Nest Tender

46.0% of decks · synergy 0.40

Atla Palani, Nest Tender runs Egg tokens as the core mechanism, and Sundering Growth's populate can copy an Egg to create another free creature cheat — removal that doubles as an engine piece is exactly what this shell wants.

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Commander is the obvious home for Sundering Growth — the format is saturated with artifacts and enchantments worth destroying, and any token strategy gets the populate trigger for free. In Pauper, it's a legitimate maindeck option in Selesnya token lists where the effect is real and the cost is low enough to cast on the opponent's turn. Modern and Pioneer have faster clocks and higher-efficiency removal, so Sundering Growth mostly sits in sideboards at best, and even there Disenchant or Wear // Tear often edge it out on flexibility. Legacy and Vintage don't lack for two-mana answers, and the populate rider rarely matters in those formats.
