Sentinel card art
Sentinel turns any creature into an indefinitely recurring blocker — tap it to give a target creature defender and zero power until end of turn, and you can activate it as many times as you want for one generic mana each. The cost is that you're spending a card and mana to affect only combat, which makes Sentinel a narrow tool only worth slotting when your deck specifically rewards repeated tapping or needs a stax-adjacent blocker lock. Altanak, the Thrice-Called is the clearest example of a commander that rewards this kind of repetitive activation.

Sentinel is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and that's where the conversation starts and ends — its effect is far too slow and mana-intensive to see Legacy or Vintage play, where one mana needs to do dramatically more. In Commander, Sentinel earns a narrow seat in decks that generate value from repeated tap activations, whether that's untap-matters commanders, token-flooding strategies that need to stall combat, or fringe stax builds trying to lock down a single threatening creature turn after turn. Outside of those specific niches, it's a bulk rare that does less than a fog effect at a higher cumulative cost.

Price Context

Current price

$0.35 bulk tier

At $0.35, Sentinel is firmly bulk — a price that accurately reflects its narrow application. Demand isn't going to move this card meaningfully unless a future commander makes repeated tap-activation looping a primary game plan, so there's no reason to buy more than you need for a specific deck.
