Prologue to Phyresis card art
Prologue to Phyresis puts an oil counter on each opponent and proliferates — two lines of poison progress on one card for a single blue mana. The cost is that it does nothing without a poison or counter-based engine already in motion, but in the right shell, particularly alongside Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus doubling every proliferate trigger, it's one of the most mana-efficient infect support spells available, and Storm King's Thunder copying it turns a one-mana cantrip into a game-ending cascade.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus

64.4% of decks · synergy 0.62

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus doubles every proliferate trigger, so Prologue to Phyresis effectively delivers two oil counters and two proliferates on each opponent for one mana — the math gets out of hand fast.

03
Kilo, Apogee Mind

Kilo, Apogee Mind

42.7% of decks · synergy 0.40

Kilo, Apogee Mind cares about proliferate as a resource engine, and Prologue to Phyresis is one of the cheapest ways to trigger that engine while simultaneously threatening multiple opponents.

04

Jin-Gitaxias

31.5% of decks · synergy 0.29

Jin-Gitaxias builds toward a Phyrexian transformation plan where every poison and oil counter matters; Prologue to Phyresis seeds all three opponents at once, compressing the setup work considerably.

05
Zethi, Arcane Blademaster

Zethi, Arcane Blademaster

20.7% of decks · synergy 0.20

Zethi, Arcane Blademaster copies instants and sorceries attached to it each combat, so a single copy of Prologue to Phyresis stapled to Zethi becomes a repeating, scalable poison delivery mechanism every attack step.

Prologue to Phyresis is legal in every relevant format but Commander is where it actually earns a slot. In Pauper infect or proliferate strategies it's a clean one-mana spell that advances multiple angles at once, but those decks are fringe. In Modern and Pioneer, dedicated poison strategies exist but are narrow enough that Prologue to Phyresis competes with faster, more aggressive infect payoffs and rarely makes the cut outside of niche proliferate shells. Commander is the true home: multiplayer means hitting three opponents simultaneously is vastly more impactful than in any one-on-one format, and the proliferate synergy commanders in the format — Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus chief among them — give it an engine it simply doesn't have elsewhere.

Price Context

Current price

$0.54 bulk tier

At $0.54, Prologue to Phyresis sits firmly in bulk territory, which makes it an easy inclusion decision — the financial floor is essentially zero. It's unlikely to spike dramatically given its narrow application, but it's also not going lower, so picking up copies now costs nothing meaningful.
