Perilous Forays turns every token or creature death into a land drop, and with Scute Swarm or Omnath, Locus of Rage on the table it stops being a support card and starts being the engine. The cost — five mana and sacrificing a creature — is steep in isolation, but the decks that want it generate fodder faster than they can spend it.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Omnath, Locus of Rage
Omnath, Locus of Rage triggers a 5/5 elemental token on every land entering, and Perilous Forays converts those tokens right back into land drops — the loop snowballs fast enough to threaten the whole table inside two or three turns.

Yedora, Grave Gardener
Yedora, Grave Gardener flips nontoken creatures into face-down Forests on death, and Perilous Forays is the missing link that turns those Forests into live land drops, keeping the recursion engine cycling without needing a separate payoff.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Perilous Forays is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its competitive applications outside Commander are virtually nonexistent — five mana for a sacrifice outlet is too slow for any format where the game ends on turn four. In Commander it occupies a specific and well-understood niche: landfall decks that generate cheap or free creatures, where the sacrifice cost is a resource conversion rather than a loss. Outside that niche, even in Commander, Perilous Forays is a do-nothing enchantment until the engine is assembled.

Current price
$1.17 cheap tier
At $1.17, Perilous Forays is firmly budget territory — you're paying almost nothing for a card that's a centerpiece in its best decks. That price reflects narrow demand rather than low power; it holds its value as long as Omnath and landfall strategies remain popular Commander archetypes.
