Mycologist turns creature deaths into life gain and Saproling tokens, giving sacrifice-heavy decks a continuous stream of bodies that pay for themselves over a long game. Ghave, Guru of Spores uses it as a token-generating loop piece, and Yedora, Grave Gardener pairs with it to convert land-triggering deaths into board presence. At two mana, the floor is low enough to run it without much justification in any deck that kills creatures regularly.

Mycologist is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees virtually no competitive play outside Commander. In Legacy and Vintage, a two-mana 1/1 with a passive life gain trigger and slow token production has no place in formats where every card needs to answer or threaten immediately. Modern has enough efficient sacrifice payoffs that Mycologist still doesn't clear the bar — Stitcher's Supplier or Viscera Seer does more for less.
