Mesmerizing Dose puts a -1/-1 counter on a creature and taps it, all while proliferating every counter you control — three relevant effects stapled to one four-mana instant. The cost is real: four mana is a lot for tempo removal in a format that moves fast, so this card belongs in dedicated proliferate shells, not as a generic answer. Terra, Magical Adept // Esper Terra and Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus decks get full value; everyone else probably wants cheaper interaction.

Commanders with the highest synergy

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus
Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus doubles every proliferate trigger, so Mesmerizing Dose becomes a two-for-one proliferate event on a single cast — every counter on every permanent ticks up twice for four mana.

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres
Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres cares about proliferate triggers directly, drawing cards each time they occur, and Mesmerizing Dose feeds that engine while also shrinking an opposing threat.
Jin-Gitaxias
Jin-Gitaxias builds toward a Phyrexian-flavored poison and counter game where Mesmerizing Dose's proliferate clause advances the board state while the tap effect buys a turn against the biggest blocker or attacker at the table.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Mesmerizing Dose is a role-player, not a staple — it earns its slot in proliferate-centric builds and falls flat everywhere else. Pauper is actually the format where it competes most credibly: at common, proliferate effects are scarce, and the combined removal-plus-proliferate text on one card has real incremental value in a slower format. In Modern and Pioneer it's too slow and too narrow; dedicated removal in those formats costs one or two mana and doesn't ask you to build around it. Legacy and Vintage ignore Mesmerizing Dose entirely — the competition at four mana is too stiff.

$0.28 bulk tier
At $0.28, Mesmerizing Dose is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not scarcity. Bulk proliferate commons don't tend to spike unless a new commander breaks the mechanic wide open, so treat this as a cheap pickup for the decks that want it and nothing more.
