Lich's Mastery turns your life total into a resource engine — every point of damage you take draws a card, and dying becomes nearly impossible as long as the enchantment sticks. The cost is real: a six-mana triple-black investment with a "can't win" clause that collapses the moment someone destroys it, making it a trap in any deck that can't protect enchantments or abuse the symmetry the way Sheoldred, the Apocalypse does. Phage the Untouchable players run it specifically because losing the game on contact is already on the table — Lich's Mastery just turns that liability into a card-draw engine.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Phage the Untouchable
Phage the Untouchable already threatens to kill its controller on a bad bounce or illegal copy, and Lich's Mastery's "you can't lose" clause patches that vulnerability while converting every hit Phage lands into a life-loss trigger that draws cards. Nearly half of all Phage decks run it, the highest inclusion rate of any commander on this list.

Blim, Comedic Genius
Blim, Comedic Genius donates permanents to opponents — and Lich's Mastery is one of the cruelest gifts, since the recipient draws cards on life loss but explodes the instant the enchantment leaves the battlefield. Blim turns Lich's Mastery into a ticking time bomb that either buries your opponent in cards they can't use or kills them when you inevitably remove it.

Queza, Augur of Agonies
Queza, Augur of Agonies pings opponents whenever you draw a card, so Lich's Mastery's life-loss-fueled card draw becomes a direct damage engine that scales with how aggressively opponents attack you. The loop is self-reinforcing: take damage, draw cards, deal damage, repeat.

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
Sheoldred, the Apocalypse already punishes opponents for drawing and rewards you for it, and Lich's Mastery converts your life-loss triggers into more draws — which means more damage dealt through Sheoldred's static ability. The synergy score is lower here than with Phage or Blim because Sheoldred decks have more ways to win without committing six mana to a fragile enchantment.
Format Analysis

| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the natural home for Lich's Mastery — multiplayer means more attacks coming your way, which means more triggers, and the six-mana cost is less punishing when games run long and opponents are busy hitting each other. In Legacy and Vintage, it's technically legal but sees no meaningful play; six mana for a "don't lose" enchantment that dies to any enchantment removal is not a competitive proposition when you could just not be at low life. Modern and Pioneer legality is similarly theoretical — Lich's Mastery has never carved out a role in those 60-card formats because the setup cost is too high and the payoff too conditional. Oathbreaker gives it a niche if your signature spell can protect it or generate immediate value, but Commander remains the format where Lich's Mastery actually does what it promises.

Pricing data for Lich's Mastery isn't currently available here, so check Scryfall or your preferred retailer for the latest number. Historically it's settled in the budget-to-mid range for a mythic enchantment with narrow appeal, so if you find it in a bulk rare bin, it's worth picking up.
