The cost is real: a six-mana triple-black investment with a "can't win" clause that collapses the moment someone destroys it, making it a trap in any deck that can't protect enchantments or abuse the symmetry the way Sheoldred, the Apocalypse does. Commander is the natural home for Lich's Mastery — multiplayer means more attacks coming your way, which means more triggers, and the six-mana cost is less punishing when games run long and opponents are busy hitting each other. In Legacy and Vintage, it's technically legal but sees no meaningful play; six mana for a "don't lose" enchantment that dies to any enchantment removal is not a competitive proposition when you could just not be at low life. Modern and Pioneer legality is similarly theoretical — Lich's Mastery has never carved out a role in those 60-card formats because the setup cost is too high and the payoff too conditional. Oathbreaker gives it a niche if your signature spell can protect it or generate immediate value, but Commander remains the format where Lich's Mastery actually does what it promises.
