Hecatomb converts four creatures into a persistent engine that tacks deathtouch onto every swamp you tap for mana — free damage on top of your normal game plan. The entry cost is steep and the enchantment dies if you fall below four creatures, but pair it with Dross Scorpion or any untap loop and the math gets out of hand fast.

Commander is where Hecatomb actually lives — 40 life gives you the runway to absorb the four-creature setup cost, and black swamp-heavy lists like Korvold or mono-black goodstuff can weaponize the deathtouch-mana consistently. Legacy and Vintage have it on the legality list, but the setup cost is disqualifying in a format where the game ends on turn two; no competitive shell wants to sacrifice four creatures for a conditional mana enchantment. Outside Commander, Hecatomb is a curiosity, not a playable.
