Hammerfist Giant

Hammerfist Giant is a Commander card through and through — the sweeper-plus-damage effect is too slow and too symmetrical for Legacy, Modern, or Vintage, where six mana buys game-ending threats and opponents rarely have fragile boards to punish. In Commander, the four-player table changes the calculus: hitting three opponents for 4 is 12 damage distributed for free, and the sweeper half can reset token strategies or clean up utility creatures across multiple boards. It earns its slot specifically in decks that neutralize the self-damage downside, whether through indestructible permanents, damage-redirection, or commanders like Aegar, the Freezing Flame that extract card advantage from the excess. Outside those shells, the symmetry is too punishing to justify the cost.
