Eldrazi Monument turns your board into an indestructible, flying army — and the only ask is one creature per upkeep, which token-heavy decks treat as a rounding error. If your commander generates creatures consistently, this is a closer; if you're running something like Apex Altisaur with a thin creature count, Shroofus Sproutsire and its token swarms show you exactly why this card belongs there and not everywhere.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Shroofus Sproutsire
Shroofus Sproutsire floods the board with creature tokens every turn, making the upkeep sacrifice on Eldrazi Monument effectively free while the indestructible and flying buff turns that swarm into an unstoppable aerial army.

Ulalek, Fused Atrocity
Ulalek, Fused Atrocity builds around massive Eldrazi creatures that already want to attack, and Eldrazi Monument layers flying and indestructibility onto threats that were already difficult to block, closing games faster and shrugging off sweepers.

The Watcher in the Water
The Watcher in the Water generates Tentacle tokens through combat, giving it a steady stream of sacrificial fodder to sustain Eldrazi Monument while the buff makes those tokens — and the commander itself — punch through any board.

Rhys the Redeemed
Rhys the Redeemed can double a token army at instant speed, ensuring Eldrazi Monument's upkeep cost is never a real threat while the flying and indestructibility upgrade turns a wide green-white token board into an aerial kill condition.

Marrow-Gnawer
Marrow-Gnawer generates Rat tokens at a pace that makes Eldrazi Monument's sacrifice trivial, and adding flying to a deck that already aims to swarm with unblockable tribal synergies can push through the last points of damage that evasion alone couldn't.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Eldrazi Monument lives — it's a five-mana artifact that does nothing the turn it enters, and the long game of Commander gives you time to establish the token engine that makes the upkeep cost irrelevant. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but essentially unplayed; five mana for a buff that requires board investment is far too slow against those formats' threat density. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home if your planeswalker generates tokens, though the smaller pod sizes make the window to profit from Eldrazi Monument narrower. Modern is technically legal, but the same problem applies — by turn five, Modern games are often already decided, and sustaining the Monument requires infrastructure that faster decks won't give you time to build.

Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Shared Animosity and Coat of Arms offer offensive upgrades in tribal token decks for under $5 each, but neither covers the indestructibility that makes Eldrazi Monument uniquely resistant to sweepers. Akroma's Memorial is the closest functional replacement — it provides flying, haste, and protection, which is arguably more impactful than indestructibility alone — but it costs more than double Eldrazi Monument at current prices, so it's an upgrade, not a substitute.
Price Context
Current price
$8.57 mid tier
At $8.57, Eldrazi Monument sits in the mid tier — meaningful enough to feel in a budget build, but not so expensive that it's out of reach for a focused purchase. It's a staple in token strategies across a wide enough range of commanders that demand stays steady, making it a stable hold rather than a spec target.
