Font of Magic card art
Font of Magic cuts the mana cost of every instant and sorcery you cast by one for each Legendary creature you control — in the right shell, that's a near-permanent cost reducer that turns three-mana spells into free ones. Ashling's Command and Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy // Scion of Halaster exemplify exactly who wants it: decks that chain instants and sorceries and can reliably field two or three legends at once.

Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy // Scion of Halaster is the premier Font of Magic home because Gale himself counts toward the discount while his ability recurs the instants and sorceries you're discounting, creating a self-reinforcing loop where Font of Magic makes the spells cheaper and Gale keeps refilling them.

Format Analysis

Font of Magic is a Commander card through and through — the Legendary density needed to make it tick is almost impossible to sustain in Legacy or Vintage, where creature-light spell decks have no interest in a five-mana enchantment that requires board presence to function. In Commander, the Legendary supertype is everywhere: your commander alone gives you the first pip, and most midrange or spellslinger builds field two or three legends by turn six without trying. Oathbreaker is technically legal and the two-planeswalker-plus-signature-spell structure guarantees you start with legends in play, but the format's faster pace and lower land counts make the five-mana entry feel steep. Realistically, Font of Magic lives and dies in Commander, where the long game rewards static cost reduction and legend-heavy strategies are a format staple.

Pricing data for Font of Magic isn't currently available in our index, so check Scryfall or your preferred retailer for the latest figure. Given its niche demand — strong in dedicated legend-heavy spellslinger builds but largely ignored elsewhere — it has historically sat in the low-to-mid single-dollar range and is worth picking up if you're building around the effect.
