Deeproot Pilgrimage turns every noncreature spell you cast into a free 1/1 Merfolk with hexproof, which means a single enchantment can flood the board while your removal and draw spells do double duty. The cost is two mana and a tribal commitment — outside Merfolk, it does nothing, but inside that tribe it rivals any token engine in the format. Wanderwine Prophets goes infinite with the tokens it generates, and Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca gets untap fodder the moment you play any spell.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca
Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca needs bodies to tap for his pump, draw, and counter abilities, and Deeproot Pilgrimage delivers one every time you play a noncreature spell — making each interaction spell net-positive on board presence. The hexproof on the tokens also insulates Kumena's tap-engine from targeted removal that would otherwise strand your board.

Hakbal of the Surging Soul
Hakbal of the Surging Soul rewards going wide with Merfolk, and Deeproot Pilgrimage is the most mana-efficient way to generate that width passively across a long game. Every explore trigger, removal spell, or ramp piece you cast becomes a free creature that fuels Hakbal's explore chains.

Neerdiv, Devious Diver
Neerdiv, Devious Diver cares about combat with unblocked Merfolk, and the hexproof tokens from Deeproot Pilgrimage are naturally hard to block into profitably. The enchantment quietly adds pressure every turn without requiring any additional investment beyond the spells you were casting anyway.

Commander is where Deeproot Pilgrimage does its best work — long games, spell-dense turns, and tribal synergy matter enough that a two-mana enchantment paying out over ten or fifteen turns is a genuine engine. In competitive non-rotating formats like Modern and Legacy, Merfolk is a real deck but the bar is high: Deeproot Pilgrimage is too slow for a strategy that wants to win on turn three or four, and the tokens don't impact the board fast enough to justify the slot. Pioneer Merfolk is less developed and tempo-focused enough that the same criticism applies, though it's slightly more forgiving. Standard legality is relevant for any Merfolk build in that format, and the card is worth testing as a two-of there. Everywhere outside Commander, treat it as a fringe role-player at best.

Current price
$2.81 cheap tier
At $2.81, Deeproot Pilgrimage sits in the sweet spot where it's an easy pickup for any Merfolk commander deck without requiring a budget conversation. It's a staple-level inclusion in the tribe rather than a spec target, so the price reflects steady demand and is unlikely to swing dramatically in either direction.
