Command Tower is an auto-include in every multicolor Commander deck — it taps for any color in your commander's identity, costs nothing to play, and enters untapped. The one real trade-off is that it's dead in mono-color shells, which is why Fynn, the Fangbearer lists and other mono-green builds skip it entirely in favor of Tower Winder or basic Forests.
Where It Shines
Where the extra mana on turn one matters most
Combos featuring Tower Winder + Kheru Goldkeeper + Six + Altar of Dementia
Command Tower gives the early-game mana flexibility to assemble the Tower Winder package a full turn faster, which matters when the combo's pieces span multiple colors and every pip counts.
Combos featuring Tower Winder + Kheru Goldkeeper + Six + Phyrexian Altar
Getting Phyrexian Altar online ahead of schedule is the whole game here, and Command Tower's ability to satisfy any color requirement in your commander's identity means you're never stumbling on the wrong pip while assembling the line.
Big-mana shells like Fynn, the Fangbearer
Fynn, the Fangbearer is mono-green, so Command Tower does nothing there — this is the clearest illustration of its only blind spot. In two-plus color aggro or midrange shells built around fast commanders, though, Command Tower is the first land that goes in and the last one you'd ever cut.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Command Tower is built for Commander and barely registers anywhere else. In 60-card formats — Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage — it's legal but nearly useless, since those formats have no commander zone and the card produces colorless mana for every non-Commander game state, making it a strict downgrade from any basic land. Pauper and Oathbreaker are the only non-Commander formats where it sees real play, and only in Oathbreaker does it function exactly as intended. If you're building a multicolor Commander deck, Command Tower goes in every time; if you're building anything else, leave it out.

$38.86 premium tier
At $38.86, Command Tower sits in premium territory almost entirely because of collector and showcase printings — the functional card itself has been reprinted so many times that non-foil copies are widely available for under a dollar. Buy the cheapest version that fits your sleeve aesthetic; the card does the same work regardless of border treatment.
