Pair it with Enchanted Evening and it becomes a one-sided board wipe that clears every permanent your opponents own.

Commander is where Calming Verse earns its slot: enchantments are everywhere across four players, the asymmetry is trivially easy to exploit in any green enchantress shell, and the ceiling with Enchanted Evening is a full board wipe for four mana. In Legacy and Vintage it's too narrow and too slow against the threats that matter. Pauper gives it the best non-Commander case — enchantment-heavy decks exist at that power level and the card is common — but even there, dedicated hate like Patrician's Scorn or Leave No Trace often does the job cheaper.
