Astral Cornucopia enters tapped and produces nothing until you invest at least three mana into X — a real cost — but doubling its counters with Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus or untapping it repeatedly with Filigree Sages turns that slow start into explosive mana production. In the right proliferate or counter-doubling shell it's a legitimate engine piece; everywhere else, it's too clunky to justify.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus
Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus doubles every proliferate trigger, which means Astral Cornucopia grows at twice the normal rate and quickly outpaces conventional mana rocks. It appears in over 77% of Tekuthal lists for exactly that reason.

Inspirit, Flagship Vessel
Inspirit, Flagship Vessel cares about charge counters and artifacts broadly, making Astral Cornucopia a natural fit both as a mana source and as a counter-bearing permanent to build around.

Kilo, Apogee Mind
Kilo, Apogee Mind's proliferate-adjacent counter manipulation lets Astral Cornucopia scale faster than its cast cost implies, giving the deck flexible colored mana that improves over time.

Zimone, Infinite Analyst
Zimone, Infinite Analyst generates value from artifacts and counters, and Astral Cornucopia feeds both halves — entering with counters and sitting in the artifact type to trigger her effects.

Rosheen, Roaring Prophet
Rosheen, Roaring Prophet cares about X spells, and Astral Cornucopia qualifies at cast, making it a synergistic ramp piece that also fuels future large X spells.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Astral Cornucopia is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it earns its keep almost exclusively in Commander. Constructed formats have access to far more efficient mana rocks that don't require a three-mana minimum investment just to produce one mana, so Astral Cornucopia doesn't see competitive play outside the occasional fringe Legacy artifact deck. In Commander, the 100-card singleton format rewards it specifically because proliferate commanders and counter-doublers transform it from a slow rock into a scaling threat — contexts that simply don't exist in other formats.

Current price
$0.29 bulk tier
At $0.29, Astral Cornucopia is firmly bulk, and that price reflects its narrow home: it's powerful in specific counter-based Commander builds and mostly irrelevant elsewhere. There's no pressure to buy multiples, but anyone building Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus or a similar proliferate deck should pick one up immediately — the price matches the ease of inclusion.
