Apocalypse wipes every permanent off the board — lands included — for six mana, and the symmetry is the point: pair it with Teferi's Protection or a similar flicker effect and you walk away from a scorched earth as the only player with anything left. It's a build-around, not a generic sweeper.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Apocalypse is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but Commander is its natural home. In Legacy and Vintage the six-mana cost is a non-starter — those formats end before Apocalypse resolves, and cheaper reset buttons exist. In Oathbreaker the lower life total and faster clock make it situationally viable but still clunky. Commander is the one format where six mana is reachable, opponents have enough permanents to make a full reset catastrophic, and you have time to set up the protection spell that turns symmetry into a win condition.

Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Jokulhaups and Obliterate cover most of the same ground as Apocalypse — both destroy all artifacts, creatures, and lands — and trade the enchantment clause for uncounterability or slight mana differences, usually at a lower price point. If the goal is purely resetting the board before opponents can rebuild, either fills the role; if enchantments specifically need to go, Apocalypse is the one to run.
Price Context
Current price
$7.97 mid tier
At $7.97, Apocalypse sits in mid-tier territory — expensive enough to feel like a deliberate include, cheap enough that it's not a barrier for a dedicated build. It's a narrow card with a stable niche, so the price reflects steady demand from combo-reset decks rather than broad adoption.
