Ancient Silver Dragon card art
Ancient Silver Dragon lands and immediately refills your hand with dice-roll card draw scaled to its power — that's a 7/6 flying body plus a burst of gas stapled together for eight mana. The cost is real, but in any Dragon shell where Sivitri, Dragon Master is tutoring it up, you're essentially paying for a threat that also solves your late-game topdeck problem in one card.

01
Sivitri, Dragon Master

Sivitri, Dragon Master

57.2% of decks · synergy 0.54

Sivitri, Dragon Master tutors Ancient Silver Dragon directly onto the battlefield, turning the eight-mana cost into a search trigger and making the draw ability a guaranteed enter-the-battlefield payoff every time Sivitri attacks.

02
Wyll, Blade of FrontiersSword Coast Sailor

Wyll, Blade of Frontiers // Sword Coast Sailor

55.1% of decks · synergy 0.52

Wyll, Blade of Frontiers doubles every dice roll, which means Ancient Silver Dragon's d20 card draw can hit up to 40 cards in hand — an obscene ceiling that makes Ancient Silver Dragon one of the highest-upside includes in any Wyll deck.

03
The Ur-Dragon

The Ur-Dragon

43.4% of decks · synergy 0.38

The Ur-Dragon reduces dragon costs and triggers an extra card draw on attack, so Ancient Silver Dragon stacks both effects and often draws double-digit cards the turn it connects with the trigger.

04
Satoru Umezawa

Satoru Umezawa

38.0% of decks · synergy 0.35

Satoru Umezawa lets you ninjutsu Ancient Silver Dragon into play for three mana and immediately trigger its draw ability on a combat damage hit, bypassing the eight-mana cost entirely for one of the highest-value ninjutsu targets in the format.

05
Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

39.0% of decks · synergy 0.33

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm copies every dragon that enters, so Ancient Silver Dragon becomes two 7/6 flying bodies — and two separate d20 card-draw triggers — off a single cast.

oathbreaker

Ancient Silver Dragon is a Commander card through and through — the dice-roll draw ability is designed for a 100-card singleton format where refilling a hand of seven matters enormously, and the political non-targeting of drawing only for yourself keeps it from warping multiplayer games too hard. Legacy and Vintage are legal homes on paper, but an eight-mana 7/6 with no immediate board impact and no protection competes against formats that end games on turns one through three, so it sees functionally zero play there. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander 60-card variant where it theoretically fits, though the higher starting life totals and slower pace still don't really justify the cost outside Dragon-tribal signatures. The honest answer is that Ancient Silver Dragon was built for Commander and should be evaluated entirely on those terms.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Harmonize and Painful Truths draw flat cards for two to three mana and never miss, which is sometimes more reliable than the variable d20 on Ancient Silver Dragon — if your deck needs consistent four-card refills rather than a high-variance burst, either outperforms it at a fraction of the price. For Dragon-tribal specifically, Kindred Discovery names Dragon and draws a card on every attack trigger, often out-drawing Ancient Silver Dragon over a full game for around five dollars.

Price Context

Current price

$57.67 premium tier

At $57.67, Ancient Silver Dragon sits firmly in the premium tier — you're paying for a unique effect that no other card replicates cleanly in Dragon shells. It's a stable staple rather than a spec target, so the price reflects real demand from The Ur-Dragon and Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm builders rather than hype.
