The lock only asks for Tradewind Rider plus two other creatures with free tap abilities — tokens, mana dorks, or tap-outlet utility creatures all qualify. Any blue creature-heavy deck, Edric, Spymaster of Trest or Tameshi, Reality Architect, runs the tap-outlet density this needs without changing its gameplan.

Prerequisites

Tradewind Rider does not have summoning sickness. You control at least two other untapped creatures.

  1. Activate Tradewind Rider by tapping it and two other untapped creatures you control, returning The One Ring from the battlefield to your hand.
  2. Cast The One Ring by paying {4}.
  3. The One Ring triggers, giving you protection from everything until your next turn.

Variations

Cheaper, tighter, alternate lines

Erratic Portal is a cheaper artifact alternative to Tradewind Rider if the creature count is low, bouncing The One Ring for 1 each turn instead of requiring a tap crew. Note the loop prevents damage but does not stop removal — a Wrath of God or exile effect ends it immediately. Pair the protection lock with an alternate win condition like Thassa, Deep-Dwelling blink loops or Laboratory Maniac to actually close the game.
