The loop hinges on Azula's firebending ability copying Ghostly Flicker on declaration of attack, then Eternal Witness recovering Ghostly Flicker from the graveyard on each iteration to keep the chain alive. Three permanents capable of producing 2U together are the only infrastructure requirement — lands, rocks, or dorks all qualify as long as they enter untapped. The table sees an attack declaration, then an instant-speed loop that generates infinite ETB and landfall triggers before combat damage resolves.

Recipe

How it works

01

Prerequisites

You control three permanents that enter untapped and that can tap to produce at least {2}{U}.

02

Steps

  1. Declare Fire Lord Azula as an attacker, triggering its firebending ability, adding {R}{R}.
  2. Holding priority, activate three permanents by tapping them, adding at least {2}{U}.
  3. Cast Ghostly Flicker by paying {2}{U}, targeting the tapped permanent and Eternal Witness.
  4. Fire Lord Azula triggers, copying Ghostly Flicker, targeting two other mana-producing permanents
  5. Resolve the copy of Ghostly Flicker, blinking the two targeted permanents.
  6. Resolve the original Ghostly Flicker, blinking the targeted permanent and Eternal Witness.
  7. When Eternal Witness enters, it triggers, returning Ghostly Flicker from your graveyard to your hand.
  8. Repeat from step 2.

03

Result

Infinite ETB; Infinite LTB; Infinite landfall triggers; Infinite magecraft triggers; Infinite mana permanents you control that enter the battlefield untapped can produce; Infinite storm count

Variations

Cheaper, tighter, alternate lines

Archaeomancer and Mnemonic Wall are direct replacements for Eternal Witness if recursion redundancy matters; they return Ghostly Flicker identically on ETB. The loop generates infinite mana and triggers but needs a payoff — Thassa's Oracle, Altar of the Brood, or any ETB damage dealer closes the game once the engine is running.
