The engine works by cycling Ardent Elementalist through death and Grenzo's bottom-of-library flip: Phyrexian Altar converts the sacrifice into one mana, The Cauldron of Eternity queues Ardent Elementalist back under the library, Grenzo pays 2 to flip it into play, and its trigger returns Dark Ritual to hand for the next iteration. The combo demands Grenzo have power 2 or greater before the loop starts, so Grenzo lists typically run dedicated power-pump to guarantee the flip. Once mana goes infinite, Grenzo's activate-at-will clause lets the pilot pull any creature in the library onto the battlefield.

Recipe

How it works

01

Prerequisites

Grenzo has power 2 or greater.

02

Steps

  1. Cast Dark Ritual by paying {B}, adding {B}{B}{B}.
  2. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing Ardent Elementalist, adding one mana of any color.
  3. When Ardent Elementalist dies, The Cauldron of Eternity triggers, putting Ardent Elementalist from your graveyard onto the bottom of your library.
  4. Activate Grenzo by paying {2}, putting Ardent Elementalist from the bottom of your library into your graveyard, and then putting it onto the battlefield.
  5. When Ardent Elementalist enters the battlefield, it triggers, returning Dark Ritual from your graveyard to your hand.
  6. Repeat.
  7. Once you have infinite mana, you may activate Grenzo's ability any number of times.

03

Result

Infinite colored mana; Infinite death triggers; Infinite ETB; Infinite LTB; Infinite magecraft triggers; Infinite sacrifice triggers; Infinite storm count; Put a selection of creature cards from your library onto the battlefield

Variations

Cheaper, tighter, alternate lines

Dualcaster Mage can replace Ardent Elementalist as the ETB piece if the goal is copying spells mid-loop rather than recurring rituals. Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat converts the infinite death triggers into the actual kill — the engine floods the board with mana but needs a damage sink to close the game.
